Deploy Android Enterprise System Apps with Intune

Learn how to add an Android Enterprise system app to your dedicated or fully managed Android Enterprise devices in Microsoft Intune.


In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to deploy Android enterprise system apps with Intune. System apps are supported on Android Enterprise devices, and you can install them from the Intune admin center with a few basic steps.


You can enable a system app for Android Enterprise dedicated devices, fully managed devices, Android Enterprise corporate-owned with work profile, or Android Enterprise personally owned work profiles.


Enterprise system apps are fairly easy to configure and install on remote Android devices. If you have already enrolled Android devices in Intune, you can deploy the following app types:

Prerequisites

Before we get started with Android enterprise system apps deployment in Intune, please go through the following prerequisites:


You should have enrolled Android devices in Microsoft Intune.

You must first enable the Enterprise app in Microsoft Intune, which requires a few details like the package name.

System apps cannot be assigned as available for a user

You will need to work with the OEM of your device to find the package name of the app you would like to enable/disable in Intune.

This is important; you cannot create an Android Enterprise system app when there is the same app in Managed Google Play in Intune.

Steps to Deploy Android Enterprise System Apps with Intune

We’ll now go through the steps for enabling and deploying the enterprise system apps with Microsoft Intune for Android devices.


Step 1: Find the Package name of an Android app

One of the prerequisites for enabling a system app in Intune is to know the package name. You will need to work with the OEM of your device to find the package name of the app you would like to enable.


Every Android app has a package name and there are multiple ways to find it out. The quickest way to determine the package name for an Android system app is as follows:


Open play.google.com in your web browser.

Use the search bar to find the app for which you need the package name.

Open the app page and look at the URL. The package name is located at the end of the URL (after the id=?).

For example, in the screenshot below, the package name of Adobe Acrobat Reader is com.adobe.reader. If you are tasked with custom Android app deployment, you should check with the app developer for the package name.


Step 2: Add Android Enterprise system app in Intune

Intune allows you to add an Android Enterprise system app to your dedicated or fully managed Android Enterprise devices.


You can enable a system app in Intune by following these steps:


Sign in to the Microsoft Intune admin center.

Select Apps > All Apps > Add.

In the Select app type pane, under the available Other types, select the Android Enterprise system app.

In the Select app type pane, under the available Other types, select the Android Enterprise system app. Click on Select.


Step 3: Configure Enterprise System App Information

On the App Information tab, configure the following details for the system app:


Name: Add a name for the app. This name will be visible in the Intune apps list and to users in the company portal.​

Publisher: The name of the developer or company that distributes the app. This information will be visible to users in the company portal.

Package Name: Contact the device manufacturer to get the app’s package name. For example, the package name for Adobe Reader app is: com.adobe.reader​​

Once you’ve configured the app information, click Next.


Step 4: App Assignments

Click Select scope tags to optionally add scope tags. On the App Assignments page, select the group assignments for the app. To enable the system app, assign the app as ‘Required.’


Note: You cannot assign an enterprise system app as available for Android devices.

Step 5: Review and Create the Enterprise System App

Review the values and settings you entered for the app. When you are done, click Create to enable the system app in Intune.

After adding the system app in Intune, the following notification appears in the top-right corner of the Intune portal: Application Created. This confirms that the system app has been added to Intune successfully. The Overview blade of the app you’ve created is displayed which shows the app details.

Monitor Android Enterprise system apps in Intune

After you have assigned the system app to Android devices, you can monitor the app installation status in the Intune admin center. Here you can see how many devices or users have successfully installed the apps, as well as any installation failures.


The Overview pane of the app shows the number of devices/users that have received the app deployment. In the screenshot below, we see that the Acrobat Reader enterprise system app has been installed on Android devices.
